Essential Safety and Competency Renewal for Working on LU Track Areas

The Basic Track Awareness (BTA) Refresher course is designed for individuals who already hold BTA competency and need to renew, update, and confirm their understanding of London Underground track safety. This refresher ensures you remain fully compliant with current LU safety rules, operational procedures, and emergency response requirements when working in or around active track areas.

This one-day theory programme reinforces the critical knowledge needed to maintain a safe working environment, especially where train movements, maintenance vehicles, or live electrical systems are present. Successful completion renews your BTA certification for a further two years.

What does the Refresher training involve?

The BTA Refresher course helps you to:

  • Reconfirm knowledge of track components and key track-side features
  • Apply safe working practices under the supervision of a qualified LU safety professional
  • Follow the latest legislation and updated London Underground safety rules
  • Respond appropriately to incidents and emergency situations
  • Demonstrate competence through a written theory assessment

Requirements before attending:

  • A Sentinel card showing completion of the LU-WSSI induction
  • A valid London Underground medical assessment (valid for five years)
  • Manager’s Declaration TSW029 form (Refresher only)
  • In-date BTA or expired within the last 14 days (Refresher only)

PPE requirements:

  • PPE is **not required** for the Refresher course as it is delivered as a theory-only session.

  • Start time: 9:00 am (arrive by 8:45 am for paperwork checks)
  • Format: Classroom learning followed by a written theory test
  • Written test: 80% pass mark required
  • Outcome: Refreshed Basic Track Awareness certificate, valid for two years
