Mental health first aid is currently a recommendation rather than a specific legal requirement. However, employers have a general duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to assess and manage all risks to employee health, including mental health. The HSE recommends that employers treat mental health on a par with physical health and consider appointing trained mental health first aiders alongside physical first aiders.
