DSEAR Dust Explosion Risk Assessment for Duty Holders E-learning Course

Combustible dust gives almost no warning. A first ignition disturbs dust that has settled on beams, ledges and equipment, and that airborne cloud fuels a second explosion that is usually the one that destroys the building. The gap between the two can be under a second.

This IIRSM-approved e-learning course gives duty holders a repeatable method for assessing combustible dust risk under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. It is pitched at the person who signs the assessment, not the person who reads it — covering what a defensible assessment has to contain, the decisions most often skipped, and what proportionate control looks like on a working site.

Which dusts are actually explosive?

More than most people expect. Flour, sugar, milk powder, wood, coal, grain, rubber, many metals and a wide range of plastics and pharmaceutical powders will all support an explosion given the right particle size, concentration and confinement.

The material being ordinary is precisely the problem. Sites handling food or timber often assess for fire and stop there, without ever classifying a dust zone or checking whether the equipment inside it is rated for the atmosphere it sits in.

Who should attend this course?

The course is written for anyone carrying legal or operational responsibility for combustible dust explosion risk under DSEAR:

  • Anyone appointed as a DSEAR duty holder or responsible person

This is duty-holder level training. Staff who work in or near a hazardous area but do not assess risk are better served by general DSEAR awareness training.

What is a secondary dust explosion?

The primary explosion is often small and survivable. What follows is not.

The pressure wave from that first event lifts settled dust off every horizontal surface in the building — roof beams, cable trays, ledges, the tops of machines. That newly airborne dust ignites in turn, and because it is spread throughout the whole structure rather than confined to one vessel, the secondary explosion is far larger.

This is why housekeeping is treated as a control measure rather than a tidiness issue, and why assessments that consider only the process vessel miss the mechanism that causes most of the damage.

This course covers combustible dust only. Flammable gases, vapours and liquids are covered by a separate DSEAR course.

Assessment and certification

Assessment is a fully online multiple-choice test taken at the end of the course, with 80% required to pass.

An IIRSM-approved digital certificate is available to download immediately on completion and is valid for three years. The certificate carries the learner’s name, company name, course name, completion date, expiry date and the approval body.

The course is self-paced, with progress saved between sessions, and runs on desktop, tablet or mobile with subtitles in over 20 languages.

Does completing this make me competent to sign off a DSEAR assessment?

No. The course provides knowledge and supporting guidance. It does not by itself make you competent, qualified or authorised, and it does not appoint you as a duty holder, responsible person or competent person.

Competence is assessed by your employer against the role, the task and your workplace. Complex sites will often still need specialist input for hazardous area classification, and recognising where that line falls is itself part of the training.

Which DSEAR course does my site need?

It depends on the substances you handle. Dust and gas behave differently, use different data and are zoned separately.

Sites with both — a solvent store alongside a powder handling line, for instance — need both. Neither course substitutes for the other.
