Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) E-learning Course

Structures fail during construction far more often than they fail in service. When they do, the cause is rarely one bad decision — it is a design used before sign-off, an inspection nobody recorded, or a change made on site that never went back to the designer. The Temporary Works Coordinator is the role built to stop that chain forming.

This IIRSM-approved e-learning course prepares people stepping into the TWC role, or newly appointed to it, to run temporary works control against CDM 2015 and BS 5975-1:2024. It sets out where coordination breaks down on real projects, which decisions carry the weight, and what a functioning control system looks like day to day.

What does a Temporary Works Coordinator actually do?

The TWC owns the process, not the design. The job is to make sure temporary works are identified early, designed by someone competent, checked at a level proportionate to the risk, built as drawn, inspected before loading, and dismantled only when authorised.

That means holding the Temporary Works Register, issuing design briefs, tracking design checks by category, and controlling the permits that release a structure for loading or removal. Where a site change forces a departure from the design, it is the TWC who decides whether it goes back to the designer.

It applies wherever a formal temporary works procedure based on BS 5975-1:2024 is in operation — construction, civil engineering, infrastructure, refurbishment, demolition and utilities.

How does the TWC role differ from the Temporary Works Supervisor?

The Coordinator owns the procedure across the project and holds the register. The Supervisor works to the Coordinator on a defined section or activity, checking that what is built matches what was designed and reporting back.

On smaller jobs one person may hold both. On larger projects the split is normal, and the reporting line between them is part of what BS 5975-1:2024 expects to see documented.

This course does not appoint you as a TWC. Appointment is an employer decision following an assessment of competence for the specific project.

Assessment and certification

Assessment is a fully online multiple-choice test taken at the end of the course, with 80% required to pass.

An IIRSM-approved digital certificate is available to download immediately on completion and is valid for three years. The certificate carries the learner’s name, company name, course name, completion date, expiry date and the approval body.

The course is self-paced, so learners can stop and return to the material, with progress saved between sessions.

Does this course appoint me as a Temporary Works Coordinator?

No, and this matters. The programme provides knowledge and supporting guidance. Appointment is an employer decision that has to follow an assessment of the individual’s competence for that specific project, plus a formal appointment giving them the authority, time and backing to do the job.

Training is one input to that judgement. It is not a substitute for it, and no online course can be.

Is this the same as the CITB Temporary Works Coordinator course?

No. They are separate qualifications covering similar ground for different purposes.

Where a principal contractor names the CITB Site Safety Plus course specifically, this e-learning course will not satisfy that requirement. It suits organisations building baseline understanding across a wider group, or individuals preparing before the classroom course.
