CCNSG Safety Passport Renewal Course

The CCNSG Safety Passport Renewal is the one-day course that renews an existing ECITB safety passport card for a further three years. It is the standard route to CCNSG renewal for anyone whose card is approaching its expiry date.

The day updates holders on changes to legislation and safety practice, refreshes the core content of the full passport, and covers hazard spotting and job safety analysis. Because many clients require a valid safety passport before granting site access, letting a card lapse can stop a worker getting on site until it is reinstated.

What is the CCNSG Safety Passport Renewal?

The renewal is a one-day ECITB-accredited course that extends an existing CCNSG Safety Passport for a further three years. Rather than repeating the full two-day syllabus, it concentrates on what has changed and refreshes the essentials.

The scheme is accredited by the ECITB in conjunction with the CCNSG, the Client Contractor National Safety Group. You will see the qualification called the CCNSG card, the ECITB safety passport, or simply the safety passport — all the same thing.

When can I book my renewal?

You can attend the renewal course up to three months before your current card expires.

Booking early costs you nothing. Your new card runs for three years from the expiry date of your existing one, not from the date you sit the course — so renewing two months early does not lose you two months of validity. There is no advantage in leaving it late, and a real risk in doing so if dates near you fill up.

What happens if my safety passport has already expired?

If your card has lapsed you are no longer eligible for the one-day renewal. You must retake the full 2-day CCNSG Safety Passport course to regain certification.

That is the difference between one day and two, at a correspondingly higher cost and more time away from work — and until the new card is issued you may be unable to get on site at all. Check the expiry date printed on your card before assuming the renewal is open to you.

What does the renewal course cover?
  • Updates on health and safety legislation and current safety practice
  • A refresher on the areas covered in the full safety passport — permits to work, scaffolding, access and egress, fire, COSHH, PPE, manual handling, noise, lifting operations and excavations
  • Hazard spotting
  • Job safety analysis

The emphasis is on what has changed since your original passport and on applying it, rather than covering the whole syllabus again from scratch.

Who can attend the renewal?

Only delegates holding a current, valid CCNSG Safety Passport. You will be asked to provide it, so keep your card to hand when booking and bring it on the day.

If you do not hold a current passport, or yours has expired, the full CCNSG Safety Passport training is the one you need.

A good understanding of spoken and written English is also required, since the training and any assessment are delivered in English.

What do I need to bring?
  • Your current, valid CCNSG Safety Passport card
  • Photographic identification
  • Your National Insurance number

All three are needed to register you with the ECITB and issue the new card. Turning up without them is likely to mean you cannot complete the course.

When will I receive my new safety passport card?

You are issued a temporary passport or written acknowledgement at the end of the training, valid for six weeks. The ECITB then issues the full card to your home address, typically around three weeks after the course.

The temporary passport matters if you need site access in the meantime — it is accepted as evidence of your training while the card is in production.

How long will my new card be valid?

Three years from the expiry date of your previous card, not from the date of the renewal course.

This is worth understanding, because it works in your favour. Renewing early does not shorten the new card — the three years are added to your existing expiry date, so you keep every day you have paid for. It also means your renewal cycle stays on the same anniversary rather than drifting earlier each time.

Renewal or the full 2-day course — which do I need?

It depends on one thing only: whether your current card is still in date.

Card still valid — take the one-day renewal. You can book from three months before expiry.

Card expired, or you have never held one — take the full two-day safety passport course. There is no grace period and no discretion on this.

If you are unsure whether your card is still valid, check the expiry date printed on it or ask your employer, who will usually hold a record.

Further study after renewal

Holders of a current, valid CCNSG Safety Passport can take the one-day CCNSG Leading a Team Safely, which covers the additional responsibilities of leading a team on site. A valid passport is a prerequisite.

For those moving into supervision on construction sites specifically, SSSTS is the more commonly required qualification.
