Not sure which course you need?

Three ways to work it out. Use the free training matrix if you are covering a whole workforce — it works out what is needed by sector, hazard and job role, and gives you a record to file. Browse by topic if you know the subject but not the qualification. Or read the health and safety guidance if you are trying to establish what the law actually requires before committing to anything.

The most commonly booked construction courses are SMSTS and SSSTS for site managers and supervisors, IPAF and PASMA for access equipment, CPCS for plant operations, asbestos awareness and NRSWA street works. SMSTS and SSSTS are required for site access on most principal contractor programmes and are valid for five years.
It depends on your role and what you need to achieve. For workers new to health and safety, IOSH Working Safely is a good starting point. For managers and supervisors, IOSH Managing Safely or the NEBOSH General Certificate are the industry benchmarks. For construction site managers, SMSTS is the standard requirement. For those pursuing a career in health and safety, the NEBOSH General Certificate leads to professional membership of IOSH.
NEBOSH is an examination board that awards its own qualifications — the most widely taken being the NEBOSH General Certificate, which is the benchmark qualification for health and safety professionals. IOSH is a professional membership body that also delivers training courses, most notably IOSH Managing Safely for managers and supervisors. IOSH courses are shorter and more introductory; NEBOSH qualifications are examination-based and more in depth.
Most awareness and compliance courses have no formal entry requirements. For NEBOSH qualifications, a good standard of written English is expected and prior health and safety knowledge is beneficial but not mandatory. SMSTS requires delegates to have management or supervisory responsibility on site. Individual course pages list any specific entry requirements before you book.
It varies by qualification. First Aid at Work certificates are valid for three years. SMSTS and SSSTS are valid for five years and require a refresher before expiry. IOSH Managing Safely does not formally expire but refresher training is recommended every three years. NEBOSH certificates do not have an expiry date. CCNSG Safety Passports are valid for three years. Always check the individual course page for renewal requirements.
