Workplace first aid, the right level for your risk

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, every employer must make adequate first aid provision based on a needs assessment of their workplace. Lower-risk sites typically need Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW, one day); higher-risk environments such as construction and manufacturing need the fuller First Aid at Work (FAW, three days), refreshed before the certificate expires. Envico is an independent booking agent: we list first aid courses from accredited providers so you can compare dates, locations and value in one place. Mental Health First Aid

eLearning

Since 2018, HSE guidance asks employers to consider mental health alongside physical first aid. This online course is a flexible starting point.

Which first aid course do I need?

Lower-risk workplace

Offices, shops and call centres usually need Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) — a one-day course covering the core life-saving skills.

Higher-risk workplace

Construction, manufacturing and warehousing typically need First Aid at Work (FAW) — three days covering a wider range of injuries and conditions.

Renewing a certificate

Certificates last three years. Requalify with a FAW Refresher / Requalification before yours expires, or retake the full course if it has lapsed.

Beyond physical first aid

Consider mental health first aid and, for childcare settings, paediatric first aid — both increasingly part of a complete needs assessment.

First aid training — frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between EFAW and FAW?
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a one-day course for lower-risk workplaces. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a three-day course covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses, suited to higher-risk environments. Your workplace first aid needs assessment determines which is appropriate.
How long is a first aid certificate valid?
EFAW and FAW certificates are valid for three years. Renew before expiry with a refresher or requalification course; if your certificate has lapsed, you may need to retake the full course. The HSE also recommends an annual skills refresher in between.
How many first aiders does my workplace need?
There’s no fixed number — it depends on your headcount, level of risk, site layout and work patterns. Employers must carry out a first aid needs assessment to decide. As a guide, a workplace of 25–50 lower-risk employees usually needs at least one first aider.
Do I need mental health first aid training too?
It isn’t a legal requirement, but since 2018 HSE guidance asks employers to consider mental health within their first aid needs assessment. Many workplaces now train mental health first aiders alongside physical ones. See the Mental Health Workplace First Aider course.
Which provider should I choose?
All three — St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and St Andrew’s First Aid — deliver HSE-recognised, nationally recognised certificates. St Andrew’s is Scotland’s dedicated provider. Choose on availability, location and dates rather than certificate value, as all meet the same standard.
Is Envico a first aid training provider?
No. Envico is an independent booking agent. We list first aid courses delivered by accredited providers so you can compare dates, locations and value, then book through us. All instruction and certification is delivered by the training provider.
