Not every workplace training need falls under one of the big awarding-body schemes. This section covers the rest — around fifty courses spanning legionella, confined spaces, incident investigation, occupational health, environmental management and plant safety, from short awareness modules to duty holder level qualifications.
Some are formally accredited by an awarding organisation, some are certificated by the provider, and the course page for each says which. All are written against current UK legislation and HSE guidance, and are available in classroom, live online, e-learning and distance learning formats depending on the subject.
Accredited or not — does it matter? It depends who is asking. Where a client, framework or insurer names a scheme, you need that scheme. Where the requirement is simply that staff are competent and you can evidence the training, a well-written provider-certificated course meets it perfectly well. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act asks for adequate training, not for a particular badge.

A word on accreditation, since it is worth being straight about it. Courses in this section vary. Some carry formal accreditation — BOHS P901 and the ProQual Level 1 among them. Others are certificated by the training provider against current legislation and HSE guidance. Neither is inherently better; they answer different questions.
What decides it is your own requirement. If a client specification, framework or insurer names an awarding body, book that. If the duty is simply to train people adequately and keep a record, a well-written provider course does the job at lower cost and with far more flexibility on dates. Every course page states which applies, and if it is unclear, ask us before booking rather than after.

Format varies by subject. Anything with a practical element is delivered in person.

Required where there is a practical assessment — confined space entry, face fit testing and equipment inspection cannot be signed off from a screen.
Tutor-led by video for the discussion-heavy subjects — investigation, risk assessment and duty holder courses — without the travel.
Delivered at your premises on your own equipment and against your own procedures. Usually cheaper per head and always more relevant.

Are these courses accredited?

Will a non-accredited course satisfy the law?
Generally yes. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the regulations under it require adequate information, instruction and training — they do not name awarding bodies. What an inspector looks for is that the training was suitable for the risk and that you can evidence it. Accreditation becomes necessary when a contract, framework or insurer makes it a condition.
How do I work out what training my workforce needs?
Start from the risk assessment rather than from a course list — the hazards present in your workplace determine the training, not the other way round. Do these courses expire?
Most carry a recommended refresher period rather than a hard expiry, commonly two or three years. Some subjects warrant more frequent refreshing — confined space entry and face fit testing among them, since competence there degrades and equipment changes. The course page states what the provider recommends.
Can these be delivered at our premises?
Most can, and for practical subjects it is often the better option — training happens on your own equipment, against your own procedures and permits, which makes it considerably more relevant than a generic session at a centre. See on-site training for groups.
Can you put together a package for our organisation?
