The NEBOSH Construction Certificate is the recognised health and safety qualification for people managing safety on construction sites day to day. Its official title is the NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK), and it was previously known as the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety — you will still see all three names used.

The classroom route suits people who learn better with a tutor in the room and other delegates to work through problems with. Delivered at accredited centres across the UK, it covers the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to manage construction hazards and to advise on duties under the CDM Regulations.

What is the NEBOSH Construction Certificate?

The NEBOSH Construction Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification for managing health and safety on construction sites. It covers the core hazards of the industry and the legal framework around them, and is widely specified in construction health and safety job descriptions.

Its official title is NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK). It replaced the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety, and both names remain in circulation — if an employer has asked for either, this is the qualification meant.

How is the NEBOSH Construction Certificate assessed?

There is one assessment, not two, which is a difference from the General Certificate.

Open-book examination. You have 48 hours to complete a written examination from home, answering a set of questions based on a real-life scenario. It is marked by external NEBOSH examiners.

The open-book format catches people out. Because you can consult your materials, the questions are written to test application and judgement rather than recall, and answers that simply repeat the textbook tend to score poorly.

What is the closing interview?

After the open-book exam you take part in a short closing interview of around 15 minutes, held over video call. You can join from a smartphone, tablet or computer.

It is not an assessment and you do not receive a mark for it. Its purpose is to confirm the submitted work is genuinely yours. The interviewer asks questions based on your exam answers, so you should be able to explain your own reasoning.

You will need photographic identification — a passport, driving licence or national identity card — and the interviewer will ask to see the room you are in, to check you have no access to notes. Once satisfied, your mark is published in line with NEBOSH timeframes.

Delegates often find this the most nerve-wracking part of the qualification, which is unnecessary: if you wrote your own answers, you already know everything you need to.

How long does the course take?

The taught element is nine days. Providers deliver this in different ways — nine consecutive days, five days one week and four the next, or spread across weekdays and weekends. Distance and online routes spread it further still.

Exact dates and delivery pattern are shown on each course before you book, so you can pick the format that fits around site commitments rather than the other way round.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. What matters is your standard of English, since the syllabus concepts have to be understood and articulated in writing.

NEBOSH recommends learners reach a minimum standard equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher. That is a recommendation rather than a barrier, but it is worth taking seriously given the assessment is a written examination.

Can I carry over units from another NEBOSH qualification?

No. NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction is a standalone qualification, so units completed as part of other NEBOSH qualifications cannot be credited against any part of it.

If you already hold the NEBOSH National General Certificate, that does not shorten this course — though the underlying principles will be familiar, which most delegates find makes the construction-specific content easier to absorb.

Construction Certificate or General Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate covers health and safety across any industry and is the more common starting point for the profession generally.

The Construction Certificate covers the same management principles but applied to construction, with substantial coverage of CDM duties, excavations, demolition, working at height and site transport that the General Certificate does not go into at the same depth.

If you work in construction and intend to stay there, the Construction Certificate is the more directly useful of the two. If you want a qualification that travels across sectors, the General Certificate is the broader choice. Neither is a prerequisite for the other.

Progression after the Construction Certificate

Many delegates progress to the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, which meets the academic requirement for Graduate Membership of IOSH (Grad IOSH) and is a route towards chartered status (CMIOSH).
