Emergency 5-Day SMSTS Training Provision

These Scheme Rules may be implemented by CITB as a result of extraordinary circumstances impacting the regular provision of training to the Construction industry. This measure is designed to maintain a level of training in the industry for existing Site Managers, ensuring a continued understanding of legislative changes and their impact on the workplace.

Using Video Technology

It is permitted to deliver the SMSTS training courses remotely via video technology solution. The training will follow the same curriculum as the classroom course and deliver the same standard of training meeting all Scheme Rules. Minimum delegate numbers for the course will be reduced to two for the period the emergency training provision is in place. To manage remote training effectively, the maximum number of delegates allowed will be reduced to ten.

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE!

Each virtual SMSTS course listed on our website includes a location including town/city, county and postcode, however it is important to note that all virtual courses can be attended from anywhere and therefore please ignore the location information. Location data is currently a system requirement to publish virtual courses on our website. If these courses continue beyond the current COVID-19 lockdown our systems will be developed further.

Aims and Objectives

The main focus of the virtual course will be risk assessment and to learn how to work and manage following the regulations stipulated by the Health and Safety at Work Act. Topics which are covered during the training include planning organising monitoring controlling and administering the following:

  • Health & Safety at Work Act
  • CDM Regulations 2015
  • Risk Assessments
  • Method Statements
  • Scaffolding
  • Excavations
  • Scaffolding
  • Demolition
  • Confined Spaces
  • Site Set Up

Course Duration and Attendance

The Site Manager Safety Training Scheme is a five day course. However, due to the delivery by remote / virtual learning the course may be split and completed over more than five days plus examination time. Delegates are required to attend and complete the full course duration to be eligible for certification. Attendees will need to show understanding of the main elements and pass the core exercises. Passing the exam will qualify the individual for the CITB certificate in construction site management which is then valid for five years.

Course Publications and Materials

Some providers may not include workbooks within the advertised course fees. Please speak with an Envico representative prior to booking to confirm this by calling 0844 5766750.

Construction site safety – The comprehensive guide (GE700) is the supporting publication for the course and is mandatory. In the event of remote training taking place, or materials being unavailable for a course running at late notice, a download version of the publication can be used by the delegate as course material. Downloadable versions of GE700 can be purchased online; click here.

Each delegate must be provided with their own copy of the current version of the mandatory course material at the start of their course, which should be retained by the delegate upon completion of the course. While download purchases should be completed and received shortly after purchase, in some circumstances they make take up to 48 hours.

Please note, all publications, whether a hard copy or download, are for single use. Any dissemination or copying of information is strictly prohibited. Please refer to the ‘End User Licence Agreement’ as part of the download purchase process.

Examination Rules

For a delegate to obtain certification for the course they must pass the relevant examination. During the period the emergency training provision is in effect, an alternative exam method will be in place for any courses that are run remotely. Due to the nature of the examination questions and the open book element, it is compulsory to use an online examination tool. Classmarker or Microsoft Forms are the recommended solutions for online assessment. Classmarker and Microsoft Forms are approved for use by CITB, any other online examination solution must be referred to CITB for approval prior to use, or examinations will be invalid.

Identification will be checked prior to the examination commencing. During the examination, the trainer will invigilate a maximum of 5 delegates. Each delegate must show the invigilator that they are alone in the room and must be visible via the video at all times. The delegate must not use any reference material until the last 10 minutes of the exam, which is the open book session.
